Fowey: Things to Do, Walks & Ferries
Fowey (say "Foy") is a pretty, hilly estuary town of narrow lanes, sailing boats and little ferries. Daphne du Maurier lived nearby, and it's one of the most charming places on the south coast.
Top things to do in Fowey
- Take the foot ferry to Polruan across the estuary, then explore its steep lanes and harbour.
- Walk the Hall Walk, a classic circular route of about four miles. It crosses to Bodinnick on the car ferry, follows the creek, and comes back via Polruan on the foot ferry.
- Readymoney Cove is a small sheltered beach a short walk from town. Climb up from it to St Catherine's Castle, a little Tudor fort.
- Literary Fowey: Daphne du Maurier set several novels around here, and the town holds a festival of arts and literature in May.
Nearby
The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are both a short drive away. On a rainy day, Par Market and Kidzworld are nearby too.
Getting there and parking
Fowey's streets are steep and very narrow, so use the main car park at the top of town and walk down. The nearest railway station is Par, with a bus connection. The Bodinnick car ferry is a handy shortcut if you're heading east towards Polperro and Looe.
Where to eat and drink nearby
- The Rashleigh Arms, Charlestown, near St Austell
- St Austell Brewery Visitor Centre, Trevarthian Road, St Austell
